Cool-weather can be drying for the skin, hence it must be properly moisturized. Recently, I made a moisturizer after someone told me that her hands were dry and can’t open her palms well. I’ve also noticed that her hands were scaly. Though she was applying a scented lotion on her hands for two days already, it’s still hard for her to stretch her fingers and open her palms and still scaly.
Reading ‘books’ and ‘do it’ yourself articles and having some wisdom about ‘essential oils’ and ‘aromatherapy’ help me to understand skin ‘disorders’ and recommended remedies for certain skin ‘illnesses’. To address the hand concern of someone I know, I made a moisturizer for her. In the process of making it, I figured out some considerations I need to make when making a moisturizer that is made of safe and natural ingredients. In the same way, the list here can also be your guide when choosing a good moisturizer.
1. Oils as an ingredient in your moisturizer is good. Oils can be effectively used as a treatment for some ‘skin condition.’
2. Some popular products contain substances that can cause side effects and even cancer. That’s why a moisturizer made of natural ingredients is not just moisturizing and healing but safer too.
3. Moisturizer must include ingredients that have the following qualities:
- Humectant – attracts or absorbs water
- Occlusive – hydrating because it can lock in water
- Emollient – can soften the skin
The good thing is that there are natural ingredients that naturally possess these qualities. Hence they can effectively moisturize your skin plus have other therapeutic effects too.
4. Avoid ingredients that are
- Comedogenic – these are ingredients that can clog the pores, hence can cause acne.
All of these factors were considered when I made my moisturizer that helped improved the dry hands of someone I know. She told me that it’s easier for her to open her palm and stretch her fingers. Hence knowing the right ingredients is important. However it is also helpful to remember that consistent application of the moisturizer is important, to see continuous improvement in dealing with the dryness and scaly look of the skin.
