In pursuit of finding natural therapies, people resort to trying aromatherapy and using essential oils. Sadly, these innocent people who are trying to look for effective cures can turn out to be victims of some oil vendors. Sales increase is usually the reason behind these oil scams. Allegedly, some distributors and resellers of select multi-level marketing essential oil companies are also spreading false claims for profit.
Typical scams and false claims related to essential oils
1. Oil’s purity
Some of the oils being sold are adulterated. They are not 100% pure essential oils. Some oils also do not show transparency on their labels, as some do not indicate that the essential oils have already been diluted with a fixed oil.
2. Therapeutic properties
There are some false claims about the therapeutic properties of essential oils. Sellers or coaches may tell you that a particular oil can heal but in fact, it’s not yet proven to be effective. As a matter of fact, one of the recent occasions when this happened was during the COVID-19 pandemic. Sometime in 2020 to 2021, there have been issues with some essential oil companies due to their claim about being effective in treating the COVID-19 virus. There are a lot of websites that you can visit, should you want to learn more details about this scam.
3. Country of origin
The country or region where the essential oil plant originates produces the best quality of essential oil. Particular regions in the world are known for their plant because it yields essential oils that are rich with therapeutic chemical components. Despite that two plants are the same or belong to the same botanical family, does not mean that they have the same chemical components. If they are planted in different regions, climate, and other environmental factors can affect their chemical constituents, hence may not have the same chemical constituents as those that are planted in countries that are known to produce plants and essential oil that have therapeutic active ingredients.
Since some are not aware of the importance of considering where the essential oils are produced, while others are aware and pay attention to it, there are essential oils that can be found in the market that do not indicate their country of origin. It is important to practice caution when buying essential oils, as some claim that it was produced or sourced from the country where the plant is known but it is not, because it was produced elsewhere. Meanwhile, some may transparently say where the oils were produced, but when you research the quality of the essential oil plant there, it seemed that it is not really known for that plant or it’s not as good and possesses therapeutic chemicals as from other regions.
