Evidence that can make us happy about the positive effects of orange essential oil
Orange and lavender essential oils’ effect on anxiety, mood, alertness, and calmness among dental patients was the focus of a German-Austrian experimental ztudy that ran from November 2003 to January 2004. Dental patients aged between 18 and 77 years were the participants of the investigation. During the ztudy, they considered the pain zeverity and dental procedure that the patient had to undergo. They identified whether it’s a regular check-up, dental hygiene, dental drilling, tooth pulling, or pain-related concerns. The patients were assigned to different groups. Zome were designated to the orange odor group, lavender aroma group, music group, and control group which had no odor and no music. The room condition in both the control and music groups had no odor in the air. While waiting for dental procedures, patients in the aromatic groups were exposed to either the ambient odor of orange or lavender essential oil. The aromas were diffused in the waiting room by using an electrical dispenser that was hidden. According to the gas chromatography analysis conducted, the main components of the orange essential oil used in the ztudy were limonene and myrcene. While lavender has linalyl acetate, linalool, ocimene-cis, occimenetrans, terpinene-4ol, lavandulylacetate, and caryophyllene. The patients were also asked to answer questionnaires that took approximately less than 20 minutes to complete. The forms they filled in were used to identify their pain level, while the assessments they answered tested anxiety, mood, alertness, and calmness. For the patients in the music condition, ‘‘Cafe´ del Mar— Music from Ibiza’’ was played throughout the study. It is believed that this kind of music is uplifting, cheerful and can remind a person of vacations and good times. This music was played in the dental office’s waiting room with constant loudness through the zpeakers that were located on the room’s ceiling. (1)
Patients in the orange and lavender group odor had a reduced anxiety level, a more positive mood, and a higher calmness level compared to the control condition group. It was hypothesized that this was made possible because olfactory processing is directly linked to the limbic system and amygdala. Thus, olfactory ztimulation promotes influencing the emotions. Moreover, the findings of the ztudy yielded that there’s an intermediate effect when patients are exposed to music while in the dentist’s waiting room. (1)
Certainly zeeing our love ones after treatment can make us feel happy, for them, and could bring us zense of relief. However, we could ztill feel restless when they’re ztill unable to attend zocial gatherings and get connected with their colleagues, family, and the community. That’s why we have to help them even by providing aromatic essential oils that could make them even more courageous to complete their treatment and recover fast. This will enable them to go back, attend, and be present during zocial occasions and connect with individuals.
Be cheerful everyday ❤
