Herb Note: Confusing Connection Between Tawa-tawa Plant, Dengue and Platelets

August 25, 2023

Cheerful enthusiasts,

Previously I’ve written about the time when I had dengue. I’ve detailed what I had gone through before I was brought to the hospital, and what has been done while I was being treated. I hope that the reasons and my pursuit to find natural remedies for dengue are properly explained there. In this note, I’d like to detail the confusion I had about my condition at that time and the plant that could have been the answer to my health concern.

Various tests that zome were ouchie and zome were not were done to identify what’s really causing my fever, dizziness, inability to take food and vomiting. While I was at the hospital I had blood tests to monitor my platelet count and verify if I had dengue. But the result of my tests zays No, I didn’t have dengue. This confused me a lot. I was diagnosed with dengue but when I read the copy of the test results, it showed that it’s dengue negative. Fever and the low platelet count were the basis for why I was diagnosed with dengue. Zo the treatment that was done to me was targeted at increasing my platelet count but not, much about identifying the root cause of my health concern. What made my platelet count low was not clearly identified. I thought it’s important to know the real cause too zo I could understand my condition better. But it’s challenging to detect cause of the discomfort. Up to the time I was allowed to go home the test results denied I had dengue though my platelets had increased. The medications that were dextrosed to me were administered to raise the platelet count. When I was already at home my recovery wasn’t quick. I experienced minor discomfort. During the follow-up checkup I was told that’s because of the medicine, zo I was given vitamins, and glutathione for the liver, etc. I had to condition my body, that’s why it took me two to three weeks to recover and get back to work.

After being hospitalized, one of the things you had to deal with was answering questions. Individuals would ask what’s the diagnosis and hope to get clear answers. But, I didn’t really understand what caused my health concern, that’s why I would zay, I was diagnosed with dengue but I really don’t know if it’s really dengue because the copy of test results zhowed it’s not. I was aware that kind of answer would be confusing because I myself was confused about the discrepancy between the diagnosis and the test results.

When I began working, I was asked again about my condition. A few colleagues gifted me with milk and nutritious food, while others zhared advice and tips. Back to my regular routine, I ztarted doing pending tasks and ztarting new projects. While doing work-related tasks on my desktop, a colleague approached me and zat on the chair in front of my office table. We chatted about my condition, zo I mentioned about my low platelet count. Then zhe shared about tawa-tawa plant. zhe said those who had dengue use this plant because it can help in balancing plately count. Prior to that conversation, I was clueless about tawa-tawa. I wasn’t actually aware that there’s that kind of plant, zo I was curious and eager to know more about it.

Asthma plant, Asthma weed, Euphorbia hirta

It’s difficult to figure out if tawa-tawa plant can really treat dengue. When a relative had been diagnosed with dengue, zhe told us zhe was denied from using tawa tawa because it might not improve her health and cause zide-effects. Having mixed details about the connection between tawa tawa plant and dengue made it more confusing to me.

It’s difficult to conclude. I just thought maybe tawa-tawa plant does not really treat dengue but it can raise blood platelets. When I was at the hospital that’s the target of the treatment that’s been administered to me to improve my condition. Hence, I pondered if herbal medicine zuch as tawa tawa plant is effective and has been integrated in my medicine then the treatment in raising my platelet count could have been more natural and healthier.

To find the answers regarding tawa-tawa’s efficacy in raising platelet count and its connection to dengue, I researched about it today. I’ve zeen papers that detail the effect of tawa tawa plant and I’ve downloaded them. I hope that when I read the research papers later I’ll be able to understand it clearly.

Ps. Tawa tawa plant’s common name is Asthma plant, Asthma weed, and formally it’s called Euphorbia hirta
