Tied Up Brief Writing Activity Role In Stress Relief

Are you already married to someone else? We all have a role to play as part of a family. We stick with them through thick and thin, may it be in sickness and better health. While doing so, inevitable and uncontrollable events may show up while taking care of our families.

Despite the inconvenience of fitting all the tasks at hand into our schedule, we make sure that we never remove our time with our family. While working, we may even think about them and put on our schedule to give them a ring to ask about their health status. We might also have made this a consistent part of our day no matter how many tasks we have at hand.

Read the case study below to know how writing collaboratively and concurrently with family and healthcare providers can help reduce stress.

Impact of brief shared writing activity

A brief shared writing exercise can enhance communication and reduce self-perceived stress. It is helpful even for people who have not used journaling or expressive writing in the past. Its effectiveness has been shown when an expressive writing tool, the Three-Minute Mental Makeover (3MMM) which was developed by a hospital’s narrative medicine group has been evaluated. From December 2016 to July 2017, patients and families were recruited from inpatient and outpatient areas in neonatal intensive care unit (ICU), pediatric ICU, inpatient general pediatric unit, outpatient pediatric clinics, and other metropolitan Chicago-area children’s hospitals. The participants were newborns to 24-year-old individuals. Patients included were diagnosed with prematurity, congenital heart disease, neurodevelopmental disorders, anxiety, cystic fibrosis, and other disorders and were under the direct care of healthcare practitioners. Patients and families who appeared to be experiencing stress, either by appearance as they looked tired, angry, sad, or exhibiting commonly stress-associated behaviors such as restlessness, lack of focus, or emotional outbursts were chosen. Meanwhile, healthcare practitioners who were included as participants and guides were pediatric cardiologists, pediatric residents, child development specialists, and pediatric nurses. When the healthcare practitioner deemed that the patients were healthy enough and able to write, they were invited to join the study. However, others opted not to participate in the activity due to some reasons such as they don’t like to write, they don’t have the time to write and they are unable to concentrate because of their child’s condition. (1)

Before the study began a packet of study materials with study identification numbers was provided to the participant. Then practitioners conducted the 3MMM activity at the patient’s bedside or in the outpatient examination room. The practitioners often guided the expressive writing activity with more than one family member per patient. Using a standardized script, practitioners led the 3MMM activity, while also writing concurrently with patients or families. They all followed the writing prompts of the short writing exercises at the same time. After writing, the healthcare practitioner invited the patient or family to share what they had written. After sharing their responses, participants filled out a post-activity paper survey to evaluate the use of expressive writing, and the 3MMM activity’s helpfulness by rating stress and communication levels. The surveys were not reviewed at the time of study interaction to avoid any instances that may cause disappointments relating to stress relief expectations and therapeutic enhancement. Instead, they were placed back into the study packet at the time of completion. If permission was granted, the practitioner keep copies of the patient’s and family member’s writing. To encourage activity repetition on their own, a brochure was given to participants after the activity. The brochure included an activity description and a list of hospital resources for addressing stress such as social work, pastoral care, and child life services. (1)

The top stress symptoms that the participants experienced before the brief expressive writing activity were exhaustion, inability to get enough sleep, high levels of frustration, irritability, and a caffeine intake increase. However, after the 3MMM activity, there was a decrease in their stress level. This confirms that expressive writing is a helpful way to help patients and families better cope with stress. Moreover, it was observed that there was more stress level improvement among those who had not previously used journaling. Eighty-eight percent of patients or family members said that the 3MMM activity was helpful, despite that only 35% of them had used writing or journaling for stress relief in the past. The result of this study demonstrates that a short shared writing exercise is not just effective in reducing stress but also enhancing communication. After the 3MMM activity, the communication between patients or family members and the healthcare team improved. Thus, this writing activity is helpful for patients, families, and healthcare practitioners in the medical setting. (1)

Make Things Better by Coping Up With Stress, and Depression Through Rosemary Essential Oil

Some things can cause stress in our lives, but our resiliency enables us to overcome those difficulties. However, when disappointment after disappointment happens, it can make us feel hopeless no matter how optimistic we are. This could even result in depression. When this happens, we may ask and wonder will things get any better?

While dealing with the hurdles, and frustrations, stressed people might feel helpless. Ergo, assisting them deal with their concerns and depression can also help them prevent illnesses that can develop due to the increased number stress hormones.

Cortisol

Cortisol is a stress hormone that can cause physiological concerns. It is also linked to depression because high cortisol levels in the body for too long can lead to depression.

Manifestation of Essential Oil’s Active Compounds On Blood

Active compounds of essential oil such as 1,8-cineole are absorbed and can be detectable in the blood serum after exposure and inhaling an oil’s aroma. Moreover, higher concentrations of absorbed 1,8-cineole can influence cognitive performance positively. These were the elicited results of a clinical experimental trial in the UK that was published in a 2012 paper. Twenty healthy volunteers participated in this closed-door clinical trial that was held in testing cubicles measuring 2.4 meters long, 1.8 meters wide, and 2.4 meters high. Before providing an introduction to the participants, four drops of rosemary oil were poured on the diffuser pads of an aroma stream which was switched on for five minutes. The diffuser was placed in the testing cubicle’s bench to perfume the rooms. Four, six, eight, or ten minutes before completing the cognitive tests, the participants were exposed to the rosemary essential oil’s aroma in a cubicle. Administering the aroma at varying times was intentionally done to determine the level of compounds that could be absorbed by the participants. To identify the connection between plasma 1,8-cineole levels and cognitive performance, subjective mood assessment tools and cognitive function activities such as serial subtraction and visual information processing tasks were performed while staying in a rosemary aroma-diffused cubicle. Moreover, one 5 ml blood sample was taken per participant by a trained phlebotomist. Results of the study yielded that 1, 8-cineole could absorbed into the body and be detectable in the blood serum after exposure and inhaling rosemary essential oil’s aroma. Absorbing higher concentrations of 1,8-cineole can positively influence cognitive performance, particularly the number of correct responses and reaction times, and mood. This result demonstrates that rosemary oil has a pharmacological activity because, upon the inhalation of its aroma, active compounds present in it are absorbed through the nasal or lung mucosa and reach the blood. Moreover, during the participants’ interview, they reported that they didn’t feel that the rosemary’s oil odor affected them badly in any way.(1)

Planning to Reduce Your Kidney Stone and Pain? Try Chanca Piedra

Symptoms of kidney stones can be uncomfortable. Because of the pain, patients can be fidgety and unsettled looking for the right position to make themselves comfortable when they feel uneasy. When they feel too much discomfort they begin to wonder about undergoing medical procedures to remove the stones and reduce the pain.

There are different methods to remove stones in your kidney. Most opt for allopathic medicine for quick stone removal. Meanwhile, botanical medicines are used by naturopathic doctors and herbalists to reduce or remove stones. However, there are only a few natural cures that you can see online that are provided with empirical evidence. As of writing, among all of the suggested natural cures for kidney stones in articles and blog posts you can see online, only Chanca Piedra has a convincing positive clinical trial result. Discover how it works in reducing kidney stones by reading the clinical trials below.

Phyllanthus niruri also known as Gale of the wind, seed-under-leaf, chanca piedra and locally called sampa-sampalukan in the Philippines was found to be helpful for people with kidney stones.

Curative Effects of Phyllanthus Niruri on Kidney Stone

1. Elimination of urinary stone

Phyllanthus niruri consumption helped in kidney stone elimination. An experimental clinical trial conducted at the clinical hospital of University of São Paulo, analyzed the effect of phyllanthus niruri on 56 patients with one or multiple small kidney stones that are measuring smaller than 10mm. The patients were between 18 and 60 years old. During the intervention stage, the patients were visited monthly and were given 60 sachets of 4.5 grams of phyllanthus nigiri dry extract herb. The plants were sourced and produced in Brazil and prepared using the shade drying method, and stored in a dry place with a 5-35°C temperature. To prevent fungi or bacteria contamination it was conserved with gamma irradiation. The extracts had a minimum 1.5% tannin content and 17% moisture content. For 12 weeks, patients were directed to drink two sachets of phyllanthus niruri dry extract-infused tea per day. They had to prepare it by infusing each 4.5g herb sachet with 250mL of boiling water. Included in the intervention program were the two rest weeks, where the herb was not used after each week of consumption. The patients themselves also served as controls, so there was a washout stage which was a phase where the participants did not consume phyllanthus nigiri for 12 weeks. Each patient was followed up for 26 weeks. Analysis outcome showed that 67.8% of the patients had decreased stone size. According to some patients they had spontaneous stone passage between the 21st and 70th day of phyllanthus niruri administration period. Four patients had their six stones eliminated, and five individuals had sandy fragments in their urine during phyllanthus nigiri administration. However, some patients experienced haematuria and abdominal pain which could be related to the small calculi eliminated during the intervention phase as patients observed the sand fragments in their urine. Since pain is a usual symptom among lithiasis patients, it can not be attributed to phyllanthus niruri consumption. Moreover, participants who had hyperoxaluria had their oxalate reduced, while hyperuricosuric patients had a decreased uric acid. Consuming phyllanthus niruri tea also increased urinary excretion of magnesium and potassium which could be the reason for the normalization of metabolic changes observed after using phyllanthus nigiri. Alkaline phosphatase reduction may have contributed to the decrease of calculi number, because alkaline phosphatase may be involved in the mechanism of calculi formation in hypercalciuria. Moreover, phyllanthus niruri intake did not cause remarkable adverse effects nor significant serum metabolic changes hence deemed to be safe. (1)

2. Reduced urinary calcium in hypercalciuric patients

Phyllanthus niruri intake decreases urinary calcium, especially among hypercalciuria patients. For three months, 69 calcium stone-forming patients were allocated to consume either 450 mg capsules, td phyllanthus niruri, or a placebo. A subset analysis was conducted for patients who had metabolic abnormalities such as hypercalciuria, hyperuricosuria, hyperoxaluria, hypocitraturia, and hypomagnesiuria. Findings indicated that before and after phyllanthus niruri intake, there were no remarkable differences in the urinary parameters values between the urine samples, except for a slight decrease in urinary magnesium which was within the normal range. However, the result of the subset analysis revealed that phyllanthus niruri induced a dramatic reduction in urinary calcium in hypercalciuric patients. In the short-term follow-up, no major differences were observed in calculi voiding or pain relief between the groups taking phyllanthus niruri or the placebo. (2)

Definition:

Hyperoxaluria – too much oxalate in your urine. This is the initial or first symptom of kidney stones. (3)

Hyperuricosuria – is the urinary excretion of uric acid of more than 800 mg per day in men and greater than 750 mg per day in women. (4)

What approach are you thinking to deal with your health concern? Are you planning to remove all your kidney stones? Through operation or have you considered mending it through Chanca Piedra. We’d love to know your insights.

More persons in the active treatment group had benefits compared to the placebo group. The regular use of the fruit powder had benefited 82% of the papaya group in terms of constipation, 78% of the papaya participants had improved flatulence and 93% of papaya group benefited with regards to painful strenuous bowel movement. The remarkable reduction of pain symptoms among those who took papaya confirmed the significant improvement in constipation. (2)

Mechanism of Papaya on Constipation Relief

Papaya (Carica Papaya L) can be used as a natural medicine or an alternative treatment for constipation relief. Aside from its nutrients, it contains non-nutritive components such as fiber, carpaine, alkaloid compounds, and proteolytic enzymes. These non-nutritives help increase fecal mass, and make stools softer hence prevents and treats constipation. (1) Additionally, it facilitates gastrointestinal function. (1)

1. Papain and flatulence

Papain’s influence on enzymatic activity enables it to support physiological digestion. Consuming high papain content can reduce flatulence and bloating because it can ameliorate symptoms related to maldigestion. (2)

2. Papain defecating pain

Papain’s antioxidant and anti-inflammatory which is attributed to the abundance of phytochemicals in papaya enables it to have an antioxidative effect in the digestive system. This is helpful when silent inflammation in the gut causes irritable bowel syndrome. (2)

Many individuals love orange papaya because it’s fruity, nutritious, and perfect for desserts. Those who are into papaya actually look forward to seeing and consuming papaya’s content every day. Does Omitting Red Hot Peppers Prevent Hemorrhoids and Reduce Constipation

Hot peppers are red-colored vegetables that make dishes hearty and look appetizing and colorful. Hence, people may add or embellish their dishes with it to express their love for exciting chili flavors. Red peppers 🌶 gives food an extra kick 🦵 and makes bland dishes tasteful and palatable. Whether in powdered form or its real shape and form, it might be your favorite garnishing for dishes. You might even make a condiment with it whenever you eat, or finish the dish you’re cooking by adding red pepper to it.

However, as you keep on reading cookbooks, and Xciting chicken recipes, you might have seen articles or videos online about the bad effects of various foods. You might have encountered that red hot peppers could mean negative. For others 🌶 symbolizes or associates it with a monstrous devilish side effect. Because it could cause the anus and lower rectum problems like hemorrhoids. Hence when people learn about this adverse reaction, they may opt to omit it in their dishes, and instead look for an alternative that could still produce an exquisite spicy food that expresses lovely flavors and excites the senses. Ergo, people might consider using 🧂 White peppercorns, Papaya seeds, Capers, and Coriander seeds. They might also spice up the dishes with ground ginger, allspice, and ground mustard.

Learn the effect of red hot pepper on your health by reading the clinical trials below.

1. Hemorrhoidal symptoms

People can eat a spicy meal with red hot chili pepper, and symptomatic hemorrhoid patients can enjoy a spicy dish occasionally because there’s no strong scientific evidence that it can worsen hemorrhoidal symptoms. This conclusion was based on the result of a clinical trial that enrolled fifty patients with second-degree and third-degree symptomatic hemorrhoids. They were designated to ingest either a single dose of red hot chili powder capsule or a placebo during lunch. During the intervention program, treatments and foods that are potentially related to anorectal symptoms were discontinued. After one week, the capsules that the patient would take had been switched, to conduct a crossover treatment. The same methodology has been carried out to administer the treatment. Results showed that before and 48 hours after taking capsules, the patients indicated low scores for hemorrhoidal symptoms such as bleeding, swelling, pain, itching, and burning were unchanged. (1)

2. Hemmorhoidal postoperative symptoms

Consuming three grams of red chilis per day during postoperative period after hemorrhoidectomy can increase the intensity of postoperative symptoms, stool frequency, and analgesics consumption. This notion was obtained from the result of a clinical trial published in 2007 in the World Journal Of Surgery. 60 postoperative patients who underwent hemorrhoidectomy due to grade III or IV hemorrhoidal disease were the participants of the study. They were allocated to the control group who were assigned to have antibiotics, and analgesics, or the chili group which received antibiotics, analgesics, and three grams of chili powder every day. The postoperative symptoms such as pain, anal burning, pruritus, and bleeding during the period were self-assessed by the patients using questionnaires. Results yielded that during the first postoperative week, the incidence of post-hemorrhoidectomy symptoms was higher in the chili group. (2)

Do you still want to use red hot peppers in your cooking or see them in the dishes that you’re consuming? Please let us know. We’d love to know. 💋

(Ciele) Quick Effect of Lavender and Chamomile Essential Oils On Depression, Stress and Anxiety

There are many reasons why old people experience depression and anxiety. Some are depressed because it takes time before they can see or communicate with their family, or they have to wait before they get to hear or receive messages from them. Old people look forward to connecting and bonding with their loved ones. At their age, this becomes one of the important sources of their joy. Ergo, old people are diligent in communicating or sending messages to their loved ones. However, due to their relatives’ and family’s roles, jobs, and busy schedules, they are unable to read and respond to their aged parents promptly at times. How about you, how’s your communication with your parents. Are you able to read the messages of your family members immediately?… Or does it take time before you can see it?

Communication is an important part of making the elderly happy. However, there are factors that we have no control over because of our responsibilities. Hence it is helpful to think of ways how to prevent and cure depression in cases where we can’t avoid what’s triggering it. Good thing that there are natural remedies that can help us manage depression and anxiety. The relaxing aroma of chamomile essential oil has been found to be helpful for the elderly’s emotional health. Read the clinical trial below to learn more.

A 30-day inhalation of chamomile oil or lavender  oil can decrease depression, anxiety, and stress immediately and one month after the intervention. This claim is based on an Iranian study conducted from March 2017 to February 2018. The participants were elderly aged at least 65 years old, who were recruited from the chosen community health centers in Iran’s urban area. The 183 participants were designated to either the control group or the experimental group which the latter was subdivided into lavender or chamomile groups. For 30 nights, both the participants in the experimental group inhaled three drops of the oil that was designated to them. Whereas the elderlies in the control group inhaled three drops of distilled water. Participants were assessed at baseline, immediately after the intervention, and one month after the intervention. Findings yielded that compared to the control group, lavender, and chamomile groups had improved conditions immediately and one month after the intervention condition. It decreased depression, anxiety, and stress levels. (1)

(Ciele) What You Need To Know About Carnivore Diet

Do you eat ‘hearty’ meat dishes? A lot of people who want to build muscles and a stronger body are into eating red meat because it’s rich in protein and other nutrients. Some are into carnivore’s diet because they are required to do so, for health reasons and they have the belief that it can strengthen them. Others however eat red meat because it’s Just yummy while others enjoy cooking it while singing about hearty red meat’s yumminess. Due to the fascination of some meat feasters, they even used it as their GrAnd theme for costume design. If you are in the same circle as these hearty meat-eaters, do you also eat hearty meat? just like them.

White meat like fish and chicken is healthy, however, eating hearty red meat can also be harmful to our human body, especially if it’s excessive. It can increase fats in the body and lead to diseases. Most of the negative effects of consuming meat can only be seen after many years of eating it. However, a century-old experiment has shown the immediate and one-year effect of eating meat.

A strict one-year meat diet can temporarily affect blood sugar and cause glycosuria or the presence of sugar in urine. This finding was obtained from the Russell Sage Institute of Pathology study in the 1920s. The experiment involved two normal healthy adult men namely K. A. and V. S. who were asked to follow a diet composed of merely lean and fat meat for one year. The meat can be eaten either cooked or raw. Their diet was high fat, and low carbohydrate, and consisted of an average of 120 grams protein and a 2600 to 3000 caloric intake. After having an exclusively lean and fat meat diet, the two men had their glucose tolerance tests to see the effect of one year’s consumption of meat on carbohydrate tolerance. The first glucose test was done immediately after the meat-fat diet was discontinued. To administer the tests, a solution was given to the men 10 to 12 hours after their last (meat) meal. Each man received 100 grams of glucose in 230 cc. of water that was flavored with 20 cc. of orange juice. Blood samples were also extracted from an elbow’s vein before the test meal, and one, two, and three hours after it. Their urine was also collected during the experiment. Evaluation results revealed that K. A.’s hyperglycemia or high blood sugar levels increased and was prolonged, and had glycosuria. Moreover, K. A. developed pneumonia eight or nine hours after the first glucose tolerance test. Meanwhile, V. S. only had an increase in hyperglycemia and his urine was sugar-free. In summary, the first glucose test result showed that after the meat diet, there was a glycosuria in one man and a blood sugar level increase in both men. The other glucose test was conducted two or more weeks after the men resumed having a general or mixed diet. At this time, four weeks have passed since the glucose test and K.A. has recovered and reported to be in good condition for his second test. Meanwhile, V. S. was in good health, his blood sugar presented no abnormalities and his urine was sugar-free. Both men’s blood sugar levels were within normal limits, and their urine was sugar-free. (1)

Due to some issues about the bad effects of red meat consumption on our bodies, some individuals may have worries and fears for themselves and their loved ones. They worry that if they can victimize others, they might easily harm them as well. Moreover, some people pity the mammals and consider it a bad and cruel deed.
