Essential Tips when Formulating a Liquid shampoo

Making a liquid shampoo with the correct formulation is quite challenging. Before you can make the right formulation, it would take some mistakes. But the good thing about making mistakes is that it leads you to understand the formulation well and realize the appropriate way of doing things. It enables you to identify the error and how to resolve it. This post was conceived from my mistakes in making a formulation, and the adjustment realizations I have.

Interpreting ingredient’s reaction to make the right formulations

Making a hair cleanser seemed easy, but actually, it can be challenging. If you’re thinking that you just need to have all the ingredients required, and that’s enough, well, that’s just part of the whole process. You need the right ingredients indeed, but you also need to understand how each ingredient would react to other ingredients. You have to see the correlation of each ingredient to get an accurate ‘formulation’. Each ‘ingredient’ could have a certain effect on the ‘formulation’. Seeing how each ingredient contributes and reacts as a whole will influence the way you will understand formulation.

Ingredient’s ‘name’

Following instructional material is crucial when making a liquid shampoo. It enables you to continue doing your liquid shampoo. Your recipe contains details on how to make liquid shampoo but sometimes it can be confusing to understand.

seeing the ingredients INCI or any technical/jargon words listed in the recipe, can be overwhelming. Ergo, sometimes, you might think things like, ‘this sound so foreign to me’ or ‘what does this ingredient or word means?’ The raw materials that you use in liquid shampoo are not the ingredients that you normally hear or see in the kitchen. Hence they can be confusing and overwhelming to understand at times. However, reading other articles enables you to comprehend what those ingredients mean. You eventually realize that they are the ingredients that you are familiar with. So be grateful that there are articles that you can read online that can help you to understand those ingredients’ names. Thank you very much lovely articles. ❤❤❤

Ingredient’s measurement

Though I have an instruction guide on making shampoo, I was not able to follow the exact measurement, and I’ve also adjusted some ingredients. To avoid making the same mistakes, I realize that it’s better to contemplate the ingredients well first. Maybe it’s okay to delay ‘making’ the mixture a bit, if you need time to learn more. When ‘you’ are already certain about the ‘ingredients,’ then ‘craft’ your ‘liquid shampoo’. That way you can be sure that you understand more about the ingredients and how it will affect the formulation.

Essential ingredients and formulation improvement

since this is my pioneer liquid shampoo, I want to learn how to make a liquid shampoo base. That’s why I choose the Essentials ingredients only.

30 grams coco glucoside
33 grams decyl glucoside
25 grams Cocamidopropyl betaine
6 grams glycerine
4 grams of xantham gum
99 grams of distilled water
25 drops coco oil
11 drops of argan oil

These are just the basic ingredients, but this liquid shampoo can even be better. Vitamins and more hair-loving ingredients can be added to make this liquid shampoo irresistibly delightful Even more. 🤭

The proper way of adding ingredients

The way you add each ingredient also matters. This will affect the texture of your formulation. If you do not follow the correct instructions, it will result in a jumbled ‘texture’.

In the instructional material I have, it says “slowly pour the surfactant into the gum and glycerine mixture” but because I just looked at the obvious details, I thought I already understood the entire instruction. But I soon realized that what I understood is just a part of it. I missed out the ‘main point that I should understand. I was not lazy to read the instruction but what happened to me was that I magnified the obvious details or the ‘concrete words,’ and the subtle details were unnoticed and missed out. Only to realize that these subtle details are the ones that make sense because they can affect ‘your’ formulation.

Assuming that I understood the entire instruction, I dived to a conclusion and have done the opposite of the instruction. Instead of pouring the surfactant into the gum, I poured the gum into the surfactant mixture, hence it was hard to blend the gum mixture into the surfactant mixture.

Overstirring

One wrong step would lead to another mistake. Because I did not understand the instruction well and added ingredients incorrectly, it led me to making another mistake – adding more water on the mixture. I want to blend the gum into the mixture, but because I can’t understand why it’s not incorporating well into the mixture, I kept on stirring it. I have tried figuring out the ‘remedy’ several times but I was still wondering why it’s not blending well. Hence I ‘overstirred’ it. And this has resulted in viscosity concerns. My liquid shampoo became frothy, foamy, and thick. It looks like 🤔… a melted bubbly ice cream. 🙄 The kind of ice cream that’s not been stored in the fridge. That’s how the texture was like. 🤭

So I tried to correct this by adding more aqua. Initially, I added 31 grams of water, then 10 grams. Afterward, the succeeding amount of water I added was 11 grams, 30g, 20g, 50g, 50g, 52g, and 40g. The reason why I kept on adding water in different amounts was because I don’t want to pour much water instantly. I want to add water little by little so I would know the effect until I poured the right amount of water to achieve the ideal viscosity of liquid shampoo. I was trying to prevent adding excessive aqua because it might become watery.

I kept on pouring water into the mixture until the total amount of water added reached 294 grams. The cited amount of aqua in the instruction guide is only 98 grams of water. On top of that, I added 99 grams of water when it should be 98 grams only. So my mixture has 3 times more water in it.

The remedy I made was somehow effective. It did thin out the viscosity, but it has bubbles in it. 🤭 So it looked like a foamy body wash. 😀 Plus it looks like it’s already used even before consuming it. 🤭 It has instant bubbles 🤭 when in fact bubbles should only be there when you use it and rub it with your hands. 🤭 So my liquid shampoo is so advanced. 🤭🤦‍.It has bubbles even before you made some bubbles with it. 🤭😃

Bottling

To bottle the liquid shampoo, I need to use a funnel to make sure it’s properly poured. It’s hard to ‘transfer’ it into the bottle because it’s frothy. If I don’t do it correctly, it will be messy. I like to avoid being messy so I need to be careful pouring it. Since I am limited at that moment because I don’t have a ‘funnel’ someOne close to me helped me to understand how I can pour the liquid shampoo. she ‘improvised’ a ‘funnel’ for me! And that’s so wonderful. 🤭🤗❤ I reeeeerally appreciate it. 🤭🤗❤ she rescued me from my confusion and limitation… Wohooo!!!! 🤭🤗❤

I also realized that I should use a clear bottle so I can observe the texture. I want to make sure that the Liquid shampoo’s texture and viscosity are good and in a stable state. Storing it in a clear bottle will enable me to keep on observing it well. I know I have to continue observing it.

This Liquid shampoo is mild. It reminds me of a person that’s always been gentle to me, so I like the word gentle. Also, all the ingredients here are carefully chosen. I made sure they are all safe, and gentle to the body.

As mentioned earlier, while making this liquid shampoo it produced many little bubbles, and still has some bubbles. Plus I love bubbles so much. So I added Bubbles in its name 🤭😃

Ergo, giving names to Each of my products makes it special for me that’s why I love naming them. It sounds lovely to me, and it’s my happiness too. 🤭🤗❤

What’s the truth about solid shampoo bars? DIY blog posts and online stores rave about the benefits of healthy and natural hair cleansers. That’s why some are relating it to solid shampoo bars and wondering if it’s what is being referred to when people talk about the healthier way of cleaning the hair.

It is understandable if we get confused about this, but it is also helpful to know the correct answer to some questions below to avoid repeated doubts.

But for transparency, I think it’s my responsibility to also discuss with my beloved readers
— about solid shampoo bars and my experience in using that —
to make you understand clearly and also assure you about the right Cleanser to choose for your hair.

As you have seen from my previous post, I have already done a solid shampoo bar, that’s why I already know what it does and how it behaves on the hair. Hence my response to the questions in this post is based on my experience.

What is a solid shampoo bar?

Mostly, shampoos are liquid. Some shampoos, however, are made like bar soaps that’s why they are called solid shampoo bars. They are used to cleanse your hair but they are harder.

What are the types of solid shampoo bar

Solid shampoo bar, made of lye. That is the shampoo bar I first made. But it made my hair tangled right away. I think my scalp was irritated because of it because it’s so itchy. If I’m not mistaken I’ve given myself a chance to use it three or four times until I got fed up with it. I thought how it behaves on my hair will not change, so, l finally decided that I don’t want to use it anymore. Several women are hooked by this shampoo because of some enticing flirtatious marketing messages, as well as the denials in reviews about this type of shampoo.

Solid shampoo bar, made of surfactant. This is also a shampoo bar that irritated my scalp which only manifested after several days of using it. I almost continued using but when I remember how it behaved on my hair, I am reminded of the reasons why I stopped using it.

Although the solid surfactant shampoo bar was still available to be used and was just left in the soap dish, I decided not to use it.

Is it safe and healthy to use a solid shampoo bar to clean your hair?

I don’t know how you perceive solid shampoo bars. Whether you think it’s safe and healthy to be used, that’s your notion, and I respect that.

But as for me, it made my scalp irritated, and it tangled my hair, that’s why I have decided to stop using it. Did it clean my hair? Well, I had to rewash my hair to remove it from my hair because if I don’t wash it away, my hair will just be tangled. The basis for my statements here is personal experience, and I’m not sure if your experience is the same thing.

My Chosen Liquid Hair Cleanser

When I discovered that Liquid shampoo is gentle on the scalp, and I heard that it can contain the botanicals and kind of ingredients that I love, I envisioned myself, washing my hair with It while listening to a musical instrument like a piano or violin and looking at a nice view. It became certain to me that I love to formulate a Liquid shampoo bar for myself.

Even during the time I was already ‘studying’ about the Liquid shampoo, the solid surfactant shampoo bar (being conveniently seen) reminded me that it was time to go back to using it, but I did not allow that urge to be entertained.

When I had a puzzling concern about formulating the Liquid shampoo bar because of its ingredients, the solid shampoo bar being placed in an easy-to-see area reminded me again to go back to using it. But at that time, my heart and mind are already deeply invested in the Liquid shampoo I want to formulate. I just had a little argument and confusion about the ingredients of the Liquid shampoo at that time, that’s why there was a pause in making it. Even though I had a little dispute with ‘myself’ about whether I will continue making the Liquid shampoo or not because of the detail I discovered about its ingredient, I couldn’t endure ignoring it. I thought I can’t leave it. I felt that if the Liquid shampoo is a person, it would get hurt, and seeing it hurt, hurts me. I couldn’t resist the urge so, I continued making my Liquid shampoo. Since the time I made that Liquid shampoo up to now (it’s been a ‘week’ by the way) it is still my Choice. My repeated Choice. So I hope this already clarifies what is my repeated Choice.

I’ll talk more about my Liquid shampoo when I’ve already written my post about it. I named it Five Gentle Bubble, because of its Characteristics.

More questions that you might ask…

Are you reserving or have any plans of using a solid shampoo bar?

As I’ve mentioned earlier, I already know the side effects of using a solid shampoo bar. I have already learned my lesson. I did not use the solid shampoo bar with lye anymore nor did I make it again. In the same way, I don’t have plans of using the solid surfactant shampoo in my hair because it’s irritating my scalp.

My focus is improving in formulating my Liquid Hair Cleanser. I’m consumed by it that I don’t even think about other shampoos.

Can you compare liquid shampoo and solid shampoo bars?

I can’t compare them. What I only know is that the solid shampoo bar did not work out for me. I’ve already tried it in the past, and I think I’ve already given enough during that time, but it did not work out for me. I can’t tell others what’s good for them, but if others think they like to use a solid shampoo bar and they think it suits them, then by all means use it.

As for me, the Liquid hair Cleanser works perfectly fine. I love it, and I don’t have any plans of changing it. As of now, I’m still in the process of improving its formulation, but I have patience in doing it. I want it to have a really good formulation because I want it to be my constant choice of hair Cleanser.

What does the Bible Say About Using Oil for Anointing the sick


People get sick. It could be because of their actions, their lifestyle, the weather, or any other environmental factors. It could be caused by something they eat or drink. Other times, it’s because of vices or unhealthy practices. The people in the bible were also exposed to such kind of surroundings and set up though just a bit more traditional. Historical figures and even Jesus Himself talked about sickness, and oil was mentioned to be poured unto people who are sick.

1. Elders anointing sick people with oil

One of the apostles of Christ instructed believers that if someone has an illness, the church elders would pray over that person. They would also anoint the sick person with oil in the name of the Lord. (James 5:14) Notice that the instruction included three things: oil, prayer, and the name of the Lord. These three components are essential. Oil alone is not how the bible instructed on how it must be used when helping the sick.

“Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord:” – James 5:14

2. Oil for healing wounds

In one of the parables in the bible, Jesus mentioned how a good samaritan helped a certain man. The good samaritan took care of the man and poured oil on his wounds so it would be healed and the man would get well.

“34 And went to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him.” – Luke 10:34

3. Oil for cleansing the lepers

Leprosy is a condition that previously was thought to be incurable. The effective treatment for this disease was only realized in the 1980s after the introduction of multi-drug therapy. (3) But the bible had been telling us for thousands of years before leprosy medicine had been developed that leprosy can be cleansed. (Leviticus 14:10-29)

The Bible provided detailed instructions on how leprosy can be cleansed. This included applying oil on the body and offering.

“10 And on the eighth day he shall take two he lambs without blemish, and one ewe lamb of the first year without blemish, and three tenth deals of fine flour for a meat offering, mingled with oil, and one log of oil.”
“12 And the priest shall take one he lamb, and offer him for a trespass offering, and the log of oil, and wave them for a wave offering before the LORD:”
“15 And the priest shall take some of the logs of oil, and pour it into the palm of his left hand:”
“16 And the priest shall dip his right finger in the oil that is in his left hand, and shall sprinkle of the oil with his finger seven times before the LORD:”

4. Oil for healing physical and spiritual sickness

Sickness in the Bible refers to illness both in the body and spirit. The body is the literal and surface meaning, while our spiritual condition is the figurative meaning. It has been mentioned that oil is used for anointing the sick, and was used for therapeutic purposes but its main importance and symbolism are related to faith (1)

“And they cast out many devils, and anointed with oil many that were sick, and healed them.” – Mark 6:13

We might still be resistant to healing using oils. However, the Bible told us that people with illness should be anointed with oil. Allow yourself to be cleansed. May we also allow ourselves to be healed with oils. Understandably, we might be hesitating or delaying this because of different concerns, but you can start learning about healing by reading the bible as well as other research articles about essential oils and therapy so you’ll obtain more wisdom.

Attar: Where Did it Come From and When Did it Start

Some travel to find rare and exotic perfumes, while some stay at home conveniently waiting for perfumes from other places to be gifted or delivered to them. May you are at home or traveling, attar is a perfume that will make you feel like you travel back to the old world and visit places where it is being made.

Let’s take a peek back to the history of attar to know who made this old perfume be commercially sold in the old ages. 

Attar Etymology 

Attar is derived from the ancient Persian word ‘itir’ or ‘atir’ which means scent. This word is said to have originated from ‘itr’ (عطر), which means  ‘perfume’ in the Arabic language.  (5,6)

Others refer to this old perfumery as ‘ittar’ or ‘itra’. It is sometimes spelled as atar, or athar. Alternative words for it are ottar, otter, otto, and âta. (6) The term and spelling for this perfume seem to depend on the place where it is being used.  

History

Ancient Egyptians are known to prepare their botanical perfumes by crushing the plants and infusing them with a base oil (1). Meanwhile,  water hydro-distillation was attributed to Ibn Sina or Avicenna who was a Persian physician. (1) It was said that Ibn Sina was able to make attar through distillation using flowers.  (5)

Mountainous flowers were used for making ittar in Yemen. Since this was considered a special variety of ittar, it was given as a gift to the royals of Arabia. This was also introduced reduced used by Yemeni Queen, Arwa al-Sulayhi. (5)

Other notable people in history who have used attar were documented. Abul Fazal Faizee purported that attar can be used in making  Mabkhara-incense-burner. While Ghazi-ud-Din Haidar Shah, who was a ruler in Awadh, perfumed his bedroom by making a fountain of attar to achieve a well-scented and romantic atmosphere. (5)

Arabians have already discovered the distillation process in the 10-11th centuries. (2) The distillation for perfume making was introduced by the Arabs to the Indians, (2) and since then, the Indians manufactured their perfume by using the traditional methods. For years, India is known to be one of the top producers of Attar. They are known to have improved the process of perfume-making by adopting both ancient Arabian and Persian innovations and merging it with ancient traditions. (3) The perfume-making expertise of Indians was documented in the book Ni’matnama, or the Book Of Delights, written by the King of Malwa Ghiyath Shahi, sometime in the late 1400s. 

It was said that Jahangir, a Mughal emperor, influenced the rampant use of attar as he encouraged the people to formulate natural scents. This has resulted in the attar-making culture. The appreciation of Mughal emperor Jahangir is seemed to be credited to the fascination of his wife empress Noor Jahan in bathing in water perfumed with rose petals. (4) 

History thus shows us that attar is indeed a thousand-year-old regal perfume.

(Ciele) Argan Oil’s Good Cutaneous Effect on Stretch Marks

Striae distensae or commonly called stretch marks are a concern faced by different people. Stretch marks that have developed in obvious places are unsightly. The condition can even be worse by removing it using bad products that can be soulfully painful and harmful to your body. Seeing this unhealthy practice being done repeatedly is saddening, hence if you ‘use’ ‘international’ brands, use medicines that are nontoxic to make sure it is safe.

Repeated use of international machine-made products is a common remedy for ‘itch’ and stretch marks. They are used to pacify the urge to release the unsightly ‘lines’ caused by stretch marks. It’s saddening to see when ‘people’ do unhealthy practices and use commercial products with synthetic ingredients that can be toxic and can hurt their ‘health’ just for the sake of satisfying their urge to look interesting.

Moreover, using anecdotal records from ‘books’ to ‘advice’ women regarding stretch marks but do not follow the right context of it is also saddening to see. I hope people can truly understand the effect of this. If the recommendation notes from the book are not appropriately followed and worse twisted for some purposes, this can result in side effects. This post includes gentle reminders because we are truly concerned for the welfare of our readers. We want you to be saved from side effects.

Certain botanical formulators remain patient in producing a cream that can improve elongated stretch marks. They believe that stretch marks can be improved by using safe and healthy ingredients. One of the anti-stretch marks ingredients that have been proven effective is argan oil. This post presents an in vivo study that reports the effect of a stretch mark cream containing argan oil.

Argan oil in anti-stretch mark cream

An argan oil-containing cream that can be used as a prevention or early treatment for stretch marks have been formulated by a group of researchers in 2016. The formulated cosmetic cream is emollient water in oil. The ingredients of the cream include argan oil and other suitable substances that can help maintain skin’s elasticity. Thus moisturizing agents and emollient ingredients were added.

The cream was tested on the skin of 22 volunteers aged between 22 years and 60 years. They applied the cream twice a day for 7 days. It is cutaneously applied by massaging it on the affected area on the upper arms of the volunteers.

The findings of the study demonstrated that the argan oil-containing cream can improve and increase the upper skin layer’s elasticity, but yielded no significant changes in the the hydration level of the stratum corneum, and epidermis thickness. This result was concluded due to the short period that the cosmetic cream was typically applied. The cream also was considered to be none irritant as it did not cause any adverse effects such as erythema and pruritus or itch. This cream containing argan oil is helpful in the prevention or early treatment of stretch marks.

I hope that we will start applying good remedies to heal Elongated stretch marks and use safe and good creams to be ‘healthier.’ Please don’t delay nor neglect embracing good practices because unhealthy practices may cause side effects.

The practice of using oil for offering has been done repeatedly. Historical accounts in the bible presents the use of oil for offering. It’s saddening to think that sometimes bible stories are being used to write articles about ‘oil’ so their readers will ‘understand’ the message in the bible about ‘oils.’ It saddens me a lot when what’s written in the bible are being used for oil’s ‘marketing message’ but it’s exactly what it means.
I hope people will have fear on God. I hope people will have respect for what’s written in the bible. Seeing how people use what’s written in the bible and mock it really makes me so sad. I hope their practice will change for the good.

How to Make a Perfume oil that you’ll Always Choose To Have

For someone who does like making perfume but is unable to do it can be saddening for that person. Previously, I have researched recipes to make perfume oil and also read about the ingredients to prepare the things I need to make a perfume oil. This allows me to easily pick ingredients that are fitting to the kind of fragrance I want to achieve. I want my perfume to smell adorably so it can communicate the right message to people who will smell it.

I wasn’t able to make my perfume instantly because I want to be careful in picking the ingredients to include. I worry that I may add ingredients that could have adverse effects. But since, I’ve already read research and articles about essential oils, it’s a sign to me that I can now safely make perfume oils.

I’ve written my notes on how to make perfume oil in 2016. It’s now six years since I’ve penned my notes about it, but I continue to love making my perfume oil. So I made my perfume oil and now writing this post about it.

Here are the notes I want to share with you so you can feel confident and assured in making a perfume you’ll love

The Essentials

To make a perfume oil, you need Essential oil and Carrier oil. These are the fundamentals when making a perfume oil.

Essential oil

There are plenty of essential oils, but you need to choose the Best Essential oil for your top note, middle note, and base note.

Three notes

Top note – this is of utmost importance because this is the fragrance note that people will smell initially. They say first impression last, so you must meditate well on what Essential oil you choose for your top note. A good fragrance is good for the soul and body.

Middle note – This is the heart note of the perfume. This fragrance note evokes the real emotions and character of the perfume. Though this sCent is subtly expressed, it is very deep and meaningful. The Essential oil you choose for the heart note is very crucial because it can make you feel elated, though sometimes it can also make you feel blue as it depends on what interpretation the Essential oil scent sends to you.

Base note – this perfume note has a long-lasting odor. It’s what stays with you. There are fixative Essential oils and remembering this is important. Knowing and remembering the list of aromatic and fixative Essential oils will enable you to feel confident and secure because you can choose the Best Essential oil you love to have as a fixative for your perfume. So even if you keep on arguing about whether you would wear your Perfume oil or not, you know you’d always choose to have your perfume. Because your fixative Essential oil smells lovely.

When adding the fragrant notes, you start with the base, the middle then the top note.

Carrier oil

Carrier oil is a must-have ingredient in your perfume oil. It dilutes the oils so they can be blended well. There are different kinds of carrier oil, but for my Perfume oil, I’ve chosen Jojoba oil which is colored Orange Yellow. It blends well with my Essential oils.

Oil measurement

A good combination of Oils, plus the right measurement equals an Enticing perfume that will you surely be enamored to. The most common recommended oil ratio when making perfumes is 20% Essential Oil and 80% Carrier oil. The reason why this is the appropriate measurement is because more than 20% essential oil can cause allergic reactions. While less than 20% essential oils will not make your perfume a perfume, but more of a spray mist, cologne, or eau de toilette. Hence 20% Essential oil is the perfect measurement for 80% Carrier oil.

The oil measurement for the previous recipe I have was

ten Drops of each oil

However, I’ve read an article that stated that oils can be mixed with unbalanced measurement

5 top and heart note
And ten Drops for the base note

But I did not follow the ten or the mixed recommendation

I followed my Chosen measurement

11 for the top note
11 for heart note
11 for the base note

And this resulted in my Charmingly Cheerful Fragrance. I’m still thinking about its name. What do you think? Do you like it? 🤭

Calculating oil measurement

Since you need 20% Essential oil for 80% Carrier oil, the easiest way to compute it is by adding the total number of drops of your carrier oil. Multiply the total number by 4 to know how many drops of carrier oil you need to add to your perfume oil.

So for my recipe, this is how I calculated it.

Add the total number of oils
11+ 11 + 11 = 33 (total number of oils)

Multiply it
33 X 4 =132 drops

Maturity and assurance of lovely fragrance

After diluting your essential oil with a carrier oil, set it aside in a safe storage area. You need to wait for at least 24 hours or more to let your perfume oil mature. When the perfume oil is mature enough you will notice that the oils are well blended, and Emits a good fragrance. The right combination of Essential oil will certainly produce a truly captivating fragrance. This becomes a fixative in your beauty care because you are assured that it will keep you smelling good all day long……………..

How to Clean Your Essential Oil Bottles and Make Them Absolutely Odorless and Oil-free


One of the routine tasks you’ll have when practicing aromatherapy is cleaning your emptied bottles of essential oil. You can skip doing this if you want to keep on buying amber bottles. However, if you want to be practical and reuse your bottles then you might wonder how can you clean the bottles properly.

This was my question when I was just starting aromatherapy. The challenge for me was how to remove the strong scent of the oil and make it oil free. Even though I’ve washed my amber bottles several times and soaked them for a long time in the water, the odor and oil just don’t go away. It stays even after I washed and dried them, Hence I would refill the bottle even if it’s still oily and has a remaining scent.

When I was refilling the bottle with diluted essential oil for personal use, I didn’t mind using it even if it has an odor left in it, and was still oily. After all, I would refill it with the same essential and carrier oil. However, when I was going to make a diluted oil for someone and changed the oil’s measurement of the blend, I wanted to make sure that it was odorless and had no oils left.

For someone who’s not an expert in house cleaning or decluttering asking your mother’s cleaning wisdom and little help from Google will help. That’s what I did and combined the tips I’ve learned. I used some liquids to clean the amber bottles but skipped some suggested steps.

Sharing with you below is the process I did and found effective in cleaning my bottles. You’re going to notice that the first three steps are just the same but the liquids being used are different as each liquid has a different purpose.

1. Fill and soak the bottle with vinegar

I’m not sure if you like the acidic scent of vinegar, but if you’re like me who doesn’t really appreciate the smell of vinegar then you have to endure it. The irony is that even though vinegar is smelly, it can get rid of the odor of your bottle.
After filing the bottle with vinegar, I set it aside and waited for a couple of hours. After I rinsed it with water, and smelled it, I figured out that vinegar is effective in removing the odor that stayed in your bottles. Soaking your bottles filled with vinegar can also help in removing the scent on the bottles lid or cover and dropper.

2. Fill and soak the bottle with dishwashing liquid

I got this tip from my mother. When I was rinsing the bottles and asked what is being used to remove the fats and oils on plates and pans when washing them, she said dishwashing liquid. Hence, I filled the 10ml amber bottle with half dishwashing liquid and half water. Just like in the first step, I set it aside and waited for a couple of hours before washing it again with water. While the bottle is filled with dishwashing liquid with water, I soaked it also with the same liquid mixture. After I rinsed it, the bottle is no longer oily.

3. Fill and soak the bottle with alcohol

Alcohol is used to make sure your bottles are disinfected. Just like the second step, fill your bottles with half alcohol then shake it then add water until it is full. I soaked them with alcohol with water for several hours before rinsing them.
When I was done rinsing the bottles, I smelled and glided my fingers on them to feel if it’s still oily. After a few minutes, I find myself satisfied. The bottles are no longer oily plus the odor of the essential oil is gone.

4. Air dry

The next step is of course dry your amber bottles. Once they are completely dry, they are ready to be re-used. 

I’ve skipped one step that others are suggesting. Some recommend sterilizing your bottle. I think that’s also good to ensure your bottles are clean. But for someone who wants easier doing things, I opted to skip that part. I was thinking I’d use alcohol anyway so maybe that’s already enough. But if you want to ensure that your bottles are very clean, then feel free to sterilize your bottles. (Since I skipped this step, I’m not sure if doing this can cut your waiting time when you soak them with vinegar, dishwashing liquid, and alcohol)

Cleaning the amber bottles is easy, but takes a lot of waiting before you can finish it. I don’t know if my process is the same as how others do it because I did not read a particular article or blog before doing it. I just looked at the snippets in the search result and asked my mother. But the process I did enable me to achieve the result I want – odorless and oily-free amber bottles.

(Ciele) Four Recommended Tea Tree Oil Dilution Methods to Treat Stubborn Nail Fungus or Onychomycosis

Recently, someone very close to me has a nail fungus or onychomycosis. It has been her problem for a few years now. I have always been interested in natural ways of healing but because I like Aromatherapy my first solution was to find an essential oil that could effectively treat her nails. Onychomycosis makes your nail look embossed because the space between the nail and the skin seemed to be filled with a solid substance. Others say that your nails become thicker and their color becomes a bit different or somewhat yellowish or paler.

Since Tea tree oil ( Ti-tree oil or Melaleuca Alternifolia oil) has been my go-to trusted essential oil, I’ve chosen it to help her treat her condition. In the book Aromatherapy an A-Z, Patricia Davis mentioned that there are only a few anti-fungal essential oils and one of them is Tea tree oil.

Tea tree oil has different anti-fungal properties. This includes alpha-Terpinene, terpinolene, alpha-terpineol, and Terpinene 4-of which is its most active anti-fungal ingredient.

I always make sure that I dilute my essential oils before I use them. Below are the different ways I dilute tea tree oil.

1. Tea tree oil with water

The first time I used Tea tree oil on her nails was several months or a year ago. I made a spray that we can mist on her nails. It’s composed of tea tree oil and water. However, we were not able to do it regularly hence we weren’t able to see if it is effective. For the few times that we’ve applied it to her nails, I have not seen any improvement, so I decided to try the next method for diluting it.

2. Tea tree oil with a carrier oil

I began to dilute tea tree oil with carrier oil when I had feet rashes. Because I’ve been using it and have noticed it’s effective for me, I thought I’d share it with her. In this dilution method, I followed the usual recommendation which is 1-2 drops of essential oil for every 12 drops of carrier oil.

When we have all consumed all the essential oil with this dilution method, I searched for different guides for diluting tea tree oil. I wanted to find the one that could best treat her nail fungus.

Different Recipe Recommendations

1. Equal amount of tea tree oil and carrier oil (1:1)

This is suited for those who wanted to use tea tree oil with higher concentration. Some believed that the stronger the concentration is, the more effective it is. Some recommend that if you are going to use tea tree oil for your nail fungus, it is good to dilute it with a carrier oil with a measurement ratio of 1:1 (i.e. your tea tree oil has an equal amount with your carrier oil. Two of the websites I’ve seen recommend that you dilute it with organic coconut oil, while others recommend jojoba or almond oil.

Moreover, they suggest that when applying it on the affected area or the nail with fungus, use cotton buds and apply it twice or thrice a day daily.

2. 2:8 (2 drops of EO to 8 drops of carrier oil)

If you are into Ayurvedic medicine, maybe you would opt for this method when diluting tea tree oil. I found this recommendation from Ayurvedic Oils. What I like about this recommendation is that you start treating your nail fungus by cleaning your foot (obliviously this applies if your fungus problem is in the nails on your feet). On their website the instruction stated was to have “2 drops of tea tree oil in a warm bath.” After making sure it is already clean you’ll then drop some diluted tea tree oil on the affected area. To do this, you have to dilute 2 drops of tree oil with 8 drops of carrier oil. The suggested carrier oil for this is olive oil.

3. 2-3 drops EO to 15-20 drops of EO

Among the tea tree oil diluting methods I found online, this one has the least drops of essential oil. I think this is good for those who have sensitive skin, especially for those who easily itch, or have some rashes when using tea tree oil or other essential oils.

In this recipe, the writer advised that if you are using 15-20 drops of carrier oil then you can add 2 to 3 drops of ti-tree oil. The writer also mentioned that for your carrier oil, coconut oil is one of the options you can have.

4. Undiluted (100% oil solution)

Most of the recommendations I’ve seen online suggest that you apply pure Melaleuca Alternifolia oil on the nail affected by fungus.

Just like in the 1:1 instruction, it is recommended to use a cotton swab. A suggested number of drops when applying 100 percent oil solution is two to five drops, while others recommend 1 to two 2 drops.

The recommended length of time you will apply tea-tree oil on your nails differs though. Some suggest that you use it for a minimum of 2 to 3 months while others say 6 months. So it would probably be safe to assume that you can use it for up to six months, but for you to see a change or improvement in your nails, it would take at least a minimum of three months. The article “3 Simple and Effective Natural Cures for Toenail Fungus” from the website Healthy and Natural World provided a good explanation for this. I like how the writer explained it in a brief, on-point, and easy-to-understand manner so I like to quote it here as is. “The nail has to grow out for the fungus to be eradicated, so you may not see results for several months.”

Meanwhile, others say it would take six months before you would see a significant result. Moreover, the usually suggested frequency for applying tea tree oil is two times a day every day. Some sites advise that you can use tea tree oil until your nail is completely fungus free or when your nail is back to normal.

Although it is almost impossible to avoid tea tree oil from being spilled on your skin when you apply it, it is still good to try your best to avoid it. I thought it’s worth mentioning the helpful suggestion I found from the Natural Living Family website which says “Take care not to apply tea tree on the skin, simply because undiluted tea tree oil might be irritating.”

For others, using undiluted tea tree oil is not a concern since it is said to be safe. In the book Aromatherapy an A-Z, Patricia Davis asserted that “Ti tree is not a skin irritant” so it can be used even if it’s pure. However, those with “ sensitive skin should use Ti-tree cautiously at first”

Just like the adage “prevention is better than cure” I also believe that it is helpful to follow standard safety guidelines when using essential oils. It is also good to listen to some suggestions such as the one that I found in the post of Doterra about Tea tree oil. It is recommended that to avoid irritation or “skin sensitivity” you have to dilute Melaleuca Alternifolia oil first with fractionated coconut oil. Moreover, they suggested that you can “Reap the benefits of Tea Tree oil for nails by applying some oil to your fingernails and toenails after you get out of the shower”
Just like me, you might also have this mindset that the higher the concentration of tea tree oil is the better because it has stronger potency, but I thought it wouldn’t also hurt to heed the warnings given by experts. A good reminder from Mayo clinic says that using undiluted ti tree oil has not yet been proven to be effective. Furthermore, you might see different results since “there are no standardized methods for harvesting tea tree oil or creating products containing the oil.” (Mayo Clinic, Tea Tree Oil Website)

Which is which?

As of now, I don’t know which one is the most effective. I’ve written here the different recommendations and to whom I think they are most suited so you can choose which one would work, do you?

It is also beneficial if you consider the manufacturer and the purity of your essential oil. Make sure that you are using the therapeutic essential oil and carefully identify the right application method you can follow to see its effectiveness.

We can follow the different recommendations above, but there’s no guarantee which one is the most effective. So far I haven’t found research that specifically tells which method of dilution is the most effective. Hence, it is best to find out for yourself what works for you.

If you’re going to ask me which one I followed, I’d say I started first with 1:1 because I wanted to have a higher tea tree oil concentration. Some books suggest that it is safe to use tea tree oil even if it is undiluted as long as you don’t have sensitive skin. (Davis, 1999) Hence I thought if I wanted to use an almost pure essential oil but somehow it is still diluted then 1:1 is the closest option to it. If the 1:1 measurement did not work then I’ll try 2:8 or go back to my previous recipe which is 2:12.

Ps. I’d like to emphasize that I’m not an expert aromatherapist, nor a naturopathic doctor. I think it is best to ask your doctor to know if it is safe for you to use tea tree oil and to know the most appropriate dilution method for your health condition.

How to Successfully Fail in Making a Flower-Infused Oil

Do you enjoy making things from the flowers and herbs that grow around you?

Yes. 

That’s the question that prompted me to write this post. Found this question from the article I’ve seen from Homemade Herbal Shampoo of The Nerdy Farm Wife a week after I attempted to make flower-infused oil

A fragrant underrated flower

The flower I chose to make an infused oil is Amazon Lily. This flower may not be so popular and its health benefits are seemed to be unknown. Even when I Googled it, search results did not show me any articles that talk about its health benefits as of the moment of writing. It does however show me tips on how to grow this kind of flower and the healthy benefits of Lily flowers but not specifically the variant Amazon Lily. I opted to use this flower simply because of its scent. I previously ignore this plant because it seldom produces flowers. I didn’t even know that it does produce flowers. When I found out it does have flowers, I still ignored it. My interest in Amazon Lily only started when I found out it has an inviting mild floral scent.

Concerning my observation about the flower’s scent, I’ve noticed that it does change. I was able to notice the changes since when our Amazon Lily plant has a flower, I go to our side yard to enjoy its scent. This flower smells fresh, sweet, and floral which could make you want to keep on smelling it. Since its scent is not too strong, you have to really put your nose close to the flower so you can smell it.

On the first day it blooms, it smells somewhat sweet and floral. On the second and succeeding days, it smells more floral than sweet. As days pass by you’d notice that the touch of sweet scent fades.

The flower of Amazon Lily only lasts for a few days. In one stem, four flowers can bloom but not at the same time. One flower would bloom today, then the second would bloom the next day or after two days, and so on. When one flower withers, another flower would bloom. It is also not an all-year flowering plant. Our plant seldom has flowers, so when it has flowers I wanted to preserve it.

The inspiration of attempting to make a flower-infused oil only came up to me because I want to keep on enjoying its scent but I can’t because its flower doesn’t t last for a long time. Hence I need to wait until a flower blooms again which by the way is uncertain when and whether it will still produce flowers.

Making a flower-infused oil despite limitations

When I attempted to make a flower-infused oil I only have a few Amazon lily flowers. To be exact I only have one newly bloomed flower plus two almost withered flowers. I know that almost-withered flowers should not be included because their scent is not that strong anymore, or in some cases, the flower has totally lost its scent.
I know that one freshly bloomed flower with a mild sweet floral scent isn’t enough, but since I really wanted to preserve its scent and see if my attempt of preserving its odor would be successful, I still pursued and picked the flowers.

During the time I experienced, I didn’t have unscented or the usual carrier oil to use. We only have olive oil, palm oil, and organic virgin coconut oil. I initially wanted to use olive oil because it’s good for the skin, but it has a certain scent and it’s being used for our food, so I opted to use the organic VCO which I use for diluting my essential oils. Although organic virgin coconut oil has a distinct smell too, I still used it because I don’t have any other available oils to use.

Flower-infused oil experiment daily development

Here is the development:

  1. First day, the scent of Amazon lily is still apparent.
  2. On the second day, the mixture became somewhat slimy, and the scent of the VCO overpowers the scent of the flower.
  3. On the following day, you cannot trace the scent of Amazon lily anymore but just VCO. Plus, it doesn’t smell so nice. I did not open it on the fourth and fifth days, because I was disappointed and was more focused on studying other things.
  4. On the sixth day, I just decided to throw it because I know whatever I do, it wouldn’t smell nice. But before I throw it, I smelled it again. And guess what?!  The smell didn’t change, it became worst actually. 

To make the long story short…

Result: Epic fail 

Lesson learned from an epic-fail flower-infused oil experiment

  • Having enough flowers is important
  • Using the right oil is a must. I have to use unscented oil. Using oils with a strong odor will overpower the natural scent of the flower, especially if the flower has a mild scent.

Even though it didn’t turn out the way I want it, it’s okay..the experiment was still worth trying. At least, I learned two things, and have seen and understood how the scent and texture change on the flower and oil each day.
