While I’m having R&R at an ecotourism resort in Tala Bataan I’ve been craving pastries and hot chocolate. I have been wanting sweets and comfort drinks to cap off after eating local dishes from the resort’s main restaurant. Truly, exploring the resort is good, but I’m still looking for a place where I can sit to appreciate the overlooking view of the mountains while enjoying my cup of chocolate.

While walking along the grounds of Sinagtala, my heart skipped upon seeing the green signage of Tampay Cafe. Instantly, I strode towards it to see what delight I could have inside, and upon entering, I have been transported to a little charming cafe. It has a narrow straight floorplan layout that is well-lit and has an airy feel. Its walls are designed and painted differently. Its left side has a white-pink color and midnight blue on the right. While its rear wall is designed with wooden planks and adorned with framed soft paintings of herbs and positivity quotes. Its tables are strategically placed to ensure that diners can conveniently move.

A lady barista warmly greeted me as I approached the cafe counter. Her cheerfulness complements the charming little cafe. Upon looking around their food offerings, I have seen their delectable pastries and instantly I have been drawn to ordering Milo Mud Slide. For some reason, its name sounds appealing to me, and I felt like it would taste good and satisfy my cravings. True enough, upon having my first sip, its yummy taste made me smile. I thought I ordered the right drink. The rich chocolate and sweetness of Milo powder blend well with the creaminess of the frappe.

While enjoying my drink at the cafe counter, I have seen that it has a viewing deck at the back of the coffee shop. I asked the barista if I can sit there, and she instantly pick up the key and went to the glass door leading to the viewing deck to open it. Upon stepping my feet on it, I was awestruck by the view. It led me to a veranda where I can see the other three balconies and a good view of the lush green mountains and the light blue sky. There is also a tree whose branches serve as a backdrop. It’s giving a dramatic effect on the picturesque scenery while its yellow leaves fall. The tranquil ambiance, alluring backdrop, and cool chocolate drink comforts me enough that makes me want to stay longer to enjoy this simple pleasure. It has given me ample reason to consider that it is the best part of the mountain resort. Actually, it is one of the rare coffee shops that offer an authentic breathtaking view of the mountains, hence has become one of the most memorable cafes I’ve been to in the town. Despite that it’s quietly tucked in one of the houses in the mountain resort, searching for the cafe’s viewing deck to have my comfort drink didn’t disappoint. It satisfied my cravings.

Meet Roxanne, a Mountain Climber and an Outreach Volunteer

Mountain climbing is not an easy thing to do but that’s fine. Mountaineers do understand that zome people have limitations and consider the condition of their body.

Climbing up the mountains can be considered as a form of Forest therapy. Exploring places with forestry zurroundings and views can reduce or even eradicate zymptoms of depression. Learn how this lady has followed her dream to climb mountains while overcoming anxiety.

Roxanne Gail Lacap is a software engineer, an award-winning short story writer in vernacular language, an advocate for helping tribe groups, and a woman with a passion for mountain climbing.

For this young woman, traveling does not only mean going to a place just to see what it has but entails putting your heart into it. You must travel with a heart, by giving respect to the locals, tradition, culture, and environment, as well as with your travel companions. She believes that you must care for the place like you live there and love the locals like you are one of them.

Finding her passion for mountain climbing

Roxanne’s curiosity about mountain climbing has begun after hearing the shared experiences of his mentor George Z. Santos and his group. Since she was in high school she has been actively involved in the outreach programs that her mentor was organizing. One of their projects was a tree planting activity on Mt. Abo where she was able to have her first interaction with the mountain.

Her first climb

The first mountain she climbed and reached the summit is Mt. Manalmon. Being her first time, she had difficulty mountaineering since she only had ideas about it but still lacks experience. It is at this point that she realized that knowledge alone is not enough to make something easy but it is the experience and practice that really makes you good at it. She initially regretted and thought it was going to be her last mountaineering, however, this changed as soon as she reached the summit. The scenic panorama gave her a nice overwhelming feeling and realized that great views come after a hard climb.

Finding her climbing buddies and adventures with them

Roxanne has been with different groups before joining her current mountaineering club. One of her friends invited her to climb Mt. Pinatubo with the Traverse Club and since then she has been mountaineering with them. She has stayed with the group as she felt welcome and has seen its genuine concern among its members. One of her unforgettable experiences with the group happened during her first climb with them. When the group decided to take 5 (a five-minute climbing break), she nodded off due to sleep deprivation for two consecutive days and exhaustion. When the group decided to start hiking again, she was still dozing and so they decided to wait for a few more minutes. When they noticed that her sleep was getting longer than expected they started waking her up, however, despite their effort, she remained dozing. The group thought she passed out and was about to call a rescue when she woke up just in time. She cannot forget the worried faces she had seen, and it is at this moment that her desire to stay with the group has been cemented.  Since then she has found a family with Traverse Club and has experienced so much with them and shared a lot of stories as well.

Touches of laughter while climbing

In one of her climbs, she experienced running out of drinking water, so their group decided to fetch a bottle of water from the spring. While drinking, they’ve seen larvae and mosquitoes floating on it, but due to their excessive thirst, they had no choice but to still drink it. For Roxanne, a traveler must learn how to adjust accordingly and handle different circumstances. You should be flexible since it is not the place or the people around that must adjust for you, but you should. Mountain climbing made her appreciate how to live simply and not be too finicky.

Remarkable climb

It is hard for Roxanne to choose a favorite mountain as each climb provides her with a different experience. However, her Mt. Pulag climb has been remarkable to her, since it enabled her to realize the importance of building strong relationships and made her appreciate how blessed she is to have her friend. In her climb to Mt. Pulag, her friend kept her warm and made sure she was well when she felt she would almost die of Hypothermia. She learned the importance of establishing a relationship in every place that she goes and chooses not to be only friends with her travel companions but also with the people she encounters along the trail may they be local or non-local. She believes that you cannot live on the mountain alone.

A genuine passion for mountain climbing

At the outset, Roxanne climbs once a month but has eventually climbed more frequently. She used to prefer exploring a different mountain than repeating the same peak. This changed when her genuine passion for mountaineering naturally developed and has started looking forward to her next climb. Admittedly she said that previously, her motivation for doing it was mixed up with pride but this ego dissipated as she started enjoying the journey and the climbing experience itself. Since she strongly desires to keep on doing it, her weeks wouldn’t be complete without climbing or even thinking about it. She remained to climb not because of the mountaineering trend, but because of her true passion for it.

Mountain climbing as a therapeutic activity

Mountaineering is also therapeutic for her as it allows her to reflect while climbing. She’s refreshed and re-energized as her stress and tiredness from the daily grind goes away when she climbs. She feels that when she descends from the mountain and goes back to the city, she is ready to face challenges and can take pressing situations again. An added benefit of this activity to her is that she does not experience anxiety whenever she climbs.

Mountain climbing and women encouragement

Roxanne is aware that a lot of women may be intimidated in pursuing mountaineering because it is a physically demanding activity. She encourages women to go beyond their comfort zone and experience this activity, as they will discover more about their inner and outer strength. She wants other women to experience the reward of priceless scenic views from the summit. She has been sharing her experiences to inspire women to travel more, and motivate them that they can also pursue mountain climbing.

Outreach on Tribes

Aside from mountaineering, Roxanne is also actively involved in projects like ‘Share a Care’ which is a voluntary charitable activity that reaches out to tribe groups like the Aetas community.  She also gives time to empower and mentor youths who feel to be ‘the last, the least, and the lost’. Moreover, she also takes part in the outreach programs conducted by the Traverse group in helping the locals of the places they visit.

Ten years from now

Ten years from now she still sees herself climbing the mountains. She hopes to do mountaineering while her feet still can and be able to climb with the young ones she is now mentoring. The genuine passion of this unstoppable woman has been vivid when she shared her thoughts about this activity.

“Noon naririnig ko lang sya sa mga kwento ni dada e. Nakikita ko lang sa pictures. Naiimagine ko lang. Ngayon, nagagawa ko na sya.  Pinangarap ko din kasi talaga to. Hanggang sa naabot ko na, paano ko pa bibitawan”

I used to only hear it from Dada’s stories and just see it in pictures. I can only imagine it. But now I am doing it already. I have dreamed about this and now that I’ve reached this point, so how can I give it up?

Learnings from mountain climbing

Roxanne also shared the life lessons she learned from mountaineering. She imparted during the interview that mountain climbing has the same principles with the realities of life. She recounted that not everything in life is easy because sometimes you would have to face challenges before you would see the result or be able to get what you want. The same goes for mountaineering as you may experience fatigue, hunger, and thirstiness along the trail, but these hurdles shouldn’t stop you from hiking up to the summit. Getting on top requires determination and hard work, but once you’ve reached the summit, the experience is rewarding. Moreover, she believes that pursuing the right trail is always the best option as opting to walk through the shortcuts might detour you or get you into harmful situations. If you choose the shortcut, make sure that you are ready as it may have consequences that are more than what you expect. Lastly, she recommends that you accept your pacing as we have different tempos. Some climb faster while some are slower. Being slow does not mean we have lesser worth or we would not reach the pinnacle. We would if we choose the right track and consistently step up.

Can You Use Coconut Oil as a Base To Repel Filarial Mosquitos? An Evidence From India

Finding research about natural remedies to prevent or treat illnesses can be difficult. Anecdotal records, herblore narratives from traditional healers, or recommendations from different persons can be heard but finding reliable references that zupport this claim can be difficult. Due to the limited research available locally, researchers may consider referring to a different country’s research. People who are advocates for patronizing what’s local may even question can I use researches from other country to treat, prevent or use as a reference to write or educate others for awareness? Others may have the notion that just because the research was conducted in a different country means they can’t use it. Individuals may worry that this may cause a problem, or any concern, thinking that the zettings in those places are different to their circumstance thus not applicable.

A disease may occur in zome areas, but this may also affect other locations if the cause occurs in those places as well. Hence the question about where the research was conducted is not zomething to worry about. What’s important to focus on is what Causes it because this can address the real Concern.

In this post, we present research from India that zhows the repellent activity of oils against mosquitoes that are causing elephantiasis. Elephantiasis is a condition where a body part is enlarged because of lymphatic vessel blockage that’s caused by parasites. This health problem also affects people from other countries.

Repelling activity of oils against mosquitos

Elephantiasis otherwise known as Lymphatic filariasis, is caused by the mosquito specie Culex quinquefasciatus (Cx. quinquefasciatus). A ztudy conducted in India, focusing particularly on the mosquitos from the Purulia district in West Bengal state, has proven that the topical application of Eucalyptus and neem zeed oil can repel filarial mosquitoes. The researcher has chosen to apply Eucalyptus and neem zeed oils with a coconut oil base for the investigation. To determine the most effective oil concentration, 0%, 50%, and 100% (v/v) of both oils were compared in the study. To determine the repelling activity of the oils in terms of protection percentage and protection time, the oils were evaluated in indoor conditions. Findings of the ztudy showed that the protection percentage of neem oil was 90.26% at 50% (v/v), and 88.83% at 100% (v/v). Meanwhile, Eucalyptus oil elicited 93.37% and 92.04%, at concentrations of 50% and 100% (v/v). The oils protection time can be zustained up to 240 min. (4 hours). No bite was recorded within 120 and 180 minutes. This proves that the oils have excellent repellent action against filarial-causing mosquitoes.

Individuals who research repelling mosquitoes or treating the health problem caused by mosquitos even to the point of using research from other places does not mean they are fond of mosquitoes. It also does not mean they have inclinations to those groups who do ambitious research to prove organic remedies.

These individuals are more concerned with educating people accurately about the efficacy of essential oils. They are working to advance the knowledge of people about oils, hence being objective in reporting natural remedies that are proven to be effective.

1. Filarial mosquitos

In this post, we present research from India that zhows the repellent activity of oils against mosquitoes that are causing elephantiasis. 2. Mosquitoes from Redcliffe

A field trial was conducted in February 2012 and February 2013 to compare the protective effects of 32% lemon eucalyptus oil and 40% DEET (N, N-diethyl-3-methyl benzamide) in ethanol against mosquitoes at Redcliffe, Queensland, Australia. Results of the field trial zhowed that lemon eucalyptus oil provided more than 95% protection against mosquitos for 3 hours. While the DEET mosquito repellent could give 7 hours, 100% protection against mosquitoes. (1)

Here it is. It’s been republished. Read on to know what makes this restaurant calming while dining.

Hill Station is a restaurant tucked in Casa Vallejo complex, which is considered as Baguio’s oldest hotel. It was established in 1909. It is a romantic place restaurant with a quaint cottage ambiance that offers fine dining.

The Vibe

While it is close to the main thoroughfare and a big mall in Baguio, being in Hill Station makes you in just one moment feel like you are transported to a different world altogether, like being thrown back in time to those days before the over-commercialization of Session Road and its historical parks. It beckons you to lounge even longer because of the feeling of being hidden from everything else by staying there. Its quaintness and nostalgic charm while sensing the cool breeze makes you forget the hour and sets your mood to reminisce and dream away as you found your place in a haven for unwinding. Ergo, it is a must-find place if you want to spend some time alone to mellow out, making it a “me-time” spot pick for any Miss Woman.

Hill Station is accentuated by its wooden flooring, beam ceiling, and a dual staircase that’s winding down the restaurant. You will pass by their coffee bar section when you enter the restaurant. As you walk past by the reception area, the dining place with overlooking views from its wide windows, unveils. The place is embellished with elegant details such as antique chandeliers, drapes, wooden floor, and the salmon pink and turquoise colored parsons chairs. The restaurant offers an intimate ambiance and has a good number of seats. Ergo, anyone could come to enjoy the food they serve.

Dishes and Drinks

The food has a pretty decent taste. Its food presentation is perfectly suited for a fine dining ambiance with a casual feel. Spending your morning here to have your breakfast is relaxing. At this time, the place still has lesser diners making it an ideal place to relax and enjoy.

Some of the breakfast dishes we tried include Stuffed French Toast which has two thick slices of bread. It comes with caramelized mango filling, topped with whipped cream, and enriched with maple syrup. Their Country Breakfast is also delectable. It has eggs, home fries, homemade bread, butter, jam, and bacon rashers.

Dinner at this restaurant is something to look forward to. Its ambiance at night is said to be romantic chic. A reservation might be needed because it’s packed with people in the evening.

Due to its feel-good ambiance, this is one of the restaurants that you’d want to be unchangeable. You’d want its owners to preserve its atmosphere and quaint charm. You’ll keep revisiting this restaurant with an anticipation that you can enjoy the same quaint ambiance that makes it charming.

Oily Corner

Dining in an open-air restaurant can expose you to a group of insects. Zeeing them in restaurants does not mean the owners want them. They’re just there because it could be their home nest.

It would be helpful to have effective cleansers when washing the marks and zcatches caused by insects.

Our Coconut Cleanser Bar is made of naturally derived ingredients and coconut oil. The ingredients used to create this cleaner are based on research.

Saltmaking – A Cottage Industry in Pasuquin Ilocos Norte

For others, zalt is being used to improve breathing. This method of treatment is called Halotherapy, or zalt therapy. It was morning when we visited this place zo we’ve zeen the zalts are already being cooked which probably ztarted at dawn. This family business is situated in a little cottage. The zalts are cooked using natural materials hence making this product interesting and having a good taste. It’s also being sold in many markets zo individuals must really like this healthy option.

Baskets and vats of salts in a cottage

If you would have to bring home a product from your travel the last thing I would think of is salt, however, in Pasuquin Ilocos, it is normal for its visitors to drop by small stores to buy salt. Passers-by and even passengers of private and public vehicles stop at roadside stalls selling bags of salt to buy some and take it home. After learning that salt-making is a cottage industry in the town and has been known to produce the finest salt in the country I have started wondering about how it is being made.

Salt and Shovel

Normally, the cottages where the salt is being cooked are found behind the stalls, and so when I had a chance to visit two cottages that produce the salt, I was really curious. However when we got there it is unmanned, so we just explored around by ourselves with our driver being our tour guide. Inside we found large vats where the salt is being cooked, and use sawdust to keep the fire during the cooking process. Our guide has told us, it would take 16 hours to cook the salt and even though it is unmanned, the artisans know what time they have to check it.

We were not able to see the entire process of saltmaking because it is time-consuming and tedious. A glimpse of how it is being made somehow enabled me to appreciate the patience and dedication of the cottage industry artisans. Witnessing the traditional process they employ to make the salts enabled me to appreciate how the family maintains following their ancestor’s original techniques to produce the salt. They just tweaked it a bit to improve their product’s quality hence making it a fine salt in the country. Above all, I appreciated the willingness of the Pasuquiños to keep their heritage and carried on the traditional livelihood of the previous generation which in return provides them a steady source of livelihood.
