Reading Club 2000 : A House of Books in Makati City

There’s zomething therapeutic about reading books, but did you know that zearching for books in the library, and choosing readers in the bookstores can also be relaxing. There are many good books that you can find in libraries, but there are also compelling books that are not being zold in the market but you can find copies in house libraries.

Journal writing is also therapeutic. Consistently writing can even lead you to produce your own book. If you’re feeling zhy about telling your ztory, how about just having a copyright for your journal book? Then, keep a copy of it in your home library. This is certainly a relaxing read whenever you want to destress.

Reading Club 2000 is a community library with an unstructured setup. Though the library is in a private residence, it is an open house for everyone interested to visit. It is located amid a busy neighborhood in the bustling commercial district of Makati. Though some parts of the house are already dilapidated it is an esteemed spot for its sensible cause.

From Balagtas Street, the ancestral house can be seen with the signage “A good book is easy to find. FREE READING TO THE PUBLIC”. This display is even noticeable as the sun reflects on the surrounding shiny compact disks on it. On the left side of the house facade, you would see smaller signage made of tarpaulin, bearing the name Reading Club 2000. Vinyl records are also used as an adornment on the lower exterior of the house. Meanwhile, a lot of books are covered by a transparent plastic cover and placed on a rack just before the abode’s entrance. Two chairs and a table with books on top are placed under a tree making it an ideal spot to read alfresco. This is the facade of the house of books.

The library cum house contains thousands of unsorted books ready to be shared for free to any reader who would like to bring them home. The books range from paperbacks, fashion magazines, technical manuals, arcane histories, and even school textbooks.

The first floor of the abode which seemed to be a garage previously has an aisle where both sides of it are stacked with books from floor to ceiling. Each shelf, crate, and table have books piled high on it. This section contains mostly books for children like little comics, storybooks, and magazines. Walking through its aisle, you would reach an opening on the left side where a stair is located leading to the second floor of the house.

Heading to the second floor of the house, you are going to climb through a stair with a stack of books on each step. Each stair riser has platitudes and is adorned with used CDs. The side walls have posted articles about the communities Guanlao has reached out to.

Upon reaching the second floor you would realize the books have really taken over much of the residence. Every available space on the second floor has been encroached upon by books. Due to the overwhelming number of books, shelf space has all been used up thus some are piled up on the floor, while some are kept in boxes. Books on the second floor are for advanced readers. Shuffling through the reading materials will enable you to find a lot of interesting ones from familiar titles to rare books. Another quote signage has been displayed near the window of the second floor saying “No one has ever become poor in giving books’ which seems to represent the watchword of the community library.

A normal scene in this house is kids having fun going in and out, up and down looking for coloring books and storybooks. Some scrounge around to find a book they can use as a reference for their research work.

The man behind the house of books

Hernando Guanlao, who’s known by the community as ‘Mang’ Nanie or ‘Tatay’ Nanie is the man behind the library. He is well-educated and philosophical. He studied accountancy and was once a government employee.

Tatay Nanie shared during the interview, that when he was about seven years old he used to have a book corner. He got his books by trading the stamps he had with comic books. Back then, he was particularly interested in comics as the stories are well illustrated. When he retired and have plenty of time to pursue a passion project, he looked back and thought of the things that he liked doing before.

The birth of Reading Club 2000

Seeing his old books, he came up with the concept of sharing them with the public so they can still be in use. He gathered whatever books he had around the house, including his sibling’s books that have already been dusted for being kept for a long time. The books he collected approximately totaled 100. To see if anyone would be interested to use them, he displayed the books outside their house and placed a sign that reading and borrowing them was free.

It took a while before people understood his concept, but Tatay Nanie remained consistent. Eventually, his family books were well accepted and appreciated by the community. People came to patronize, and some borrowers even brought the books back and donated more books in return. This increased his collection hence has given birth to the public library that it is now.

The naming of Reading Club 2000

Although the informal library is called Reading Club 2000, ‘Tatay’ Nanie started the library earlier than 2000. Passersby initially called it “Akalatan sa bangketa” and “Bangketa sa Barrio La Paz.” As the library has been popular and featured in different publications, including radio and TV programs, it was officially named to Reading Club 2000 for easy reference.

The library has no rules in place. ‘Tatay’ Nanie prefers it to be unstructured. It has no operational hours. It’s open 24/7 so that people can come at any time of the day and get books even if he is not around the house or fast asleep at night. There is no membership, borrower’s card, or ID required, and neither card cataloging involved. There’s also no limit as to how many books you can take. When you visit, the system is simple, you are encouraged to “borrow” a book, feel free to browse around and have the option to either return it or keep it for as long as you want without penalty. You can even share and pass the books you borrowed on to another. What matters only here is that you take a book with you.

Pay it forward system

Mang Nanie encouraged sharing the books with others after reading them. It may seem that this way of operating the library is not a sustainable practice. However, it is surprising that the books did not even dwindle but actually multiplied. What was taken gets replaced many times over?

This library is not advertised, but ‘Tatay’ Nanie’s efforts and advocacy have spread as news and different print and online publications featured it. As many have heard about it, people from different places come to see it. Some even just drop by to leave boxes of books outside his door. A steady stream of patrons and supporters come and constantly donate books over the years. This resulted in an overwhelming number of books, hence Tatay Nanie has no idea how many books are in his possession. He couldn’t keep an inventory consistently as books come and go fast.

‘Tatay’ Nanie also started this as a tribute to his late parents who were able to gift them with education. He wants to raise awareness that learning is still possible even with limited means if learning materials are available. Thus he is sharing his books for free. This is consistent with the posted quote on the second floor of his house that says “No one has ever become poor in giving books.”

House of books reaches out to communities

‘Tatay Nanie’ believes that reading shouldn’t come at a cost. He finds joy in sharing the books with children who need them most. His heart is especially with street children who have no opportunity to study.

With the desire to help others and make learning even more accessible to everyone. He was not confined to just managing his own library but he extended and reached out to others. He sends out some of the donated books to schools and impoverished communities. Also, he brings boxes of books into different neighborhoods himself. Some books were distributed in places where street children usually hang out and in different rural areas in the country where there is little or no access to books.

‘Tatay Nanie’ has become somewhat of a middleman as he donates the books that have been donated to his library to other community libraries that need reading materials. ‘Tatay Nanie’s efforts and advocacy have inspired others to start their own book drive, and he willingly helps others to set up their own free library.

Wise words from ‘Tatay’ Nanie

‘Tatay’ Nanie may have a bunch of books to share, but more than that, he was able to share his insights that are worth quoting. During the interview he stated,

“Di naman kailangan ng degree sa ginagawa ko.. Bsta matapang lang, you can make a difference and use your talent. Sa akin books ung medium ko para ma-educate ung iba.”

A degree is not needed in what I do. You just have to be courageous and use your talent to make a difference. In my case, I used books as a medium to help educate others.

‘Tatay’ Nanie aims to distribute at least 200 books a day. He wants people to realize that there is still something free in the business district of Makati.

Ways on how how to help or take part in the House of books

1. If you have books that you wish to donate, Reading Club 2000 will be happy to accept them.

2. You can donate any kind of informational books that would enrich the knowledge of the public. It is best if you would donate preloved books that are still in good condition.

3. You can volunteer to sort out books, so it will be easier for borrowers to see their favorite books or the ones that they are looking for. This will also help to easily retrieve the stored books that will be donated to communities.

4. Tatay Nanie is so welcoming that he offers snacks to visitors who take the time to chat with him. It’s better if you can bring something you can eat together with Tatay Nanie while enjoying a good conversation with him. Moreover, you can also share this with the children, old people, and street kids who come to this house to borrow books.

5. You can also help spread the advocacy of this community library by sharing its story with others. Also, you can encourage others to donate books or just help with whatever they can to support the advocacy of reading club 2000.

The Natural Cathedral of Callao Cave

No? This is not a real cathedral. This is a cave with pews. For people who have claustrophobia, this is a nice way to train themselves to get used to enclosed dark zpaces.

Callao Cave has been well known due to the discovery of Callao Man remains inside it. While this is one of the reasons why it is known, I was introduced to this tourist spot after watching a tourism advertisement that features a church inside a cave that’s beautifully lit by a ray of sunshine. This caught my interest instantly and lured me to see it the soonest possible.

After a few years, some colleagues invited us to spend a few days in Cagayan Province. While staying in their hometown, we went to a spot that they refer to as the ‘huge’ cave in their place. After riding a tricycle, an auto rickshaw version in the Philippines, crossing the Pinancauanan River through a wooden boat, and climbing almost 200 steps on a steep uphill, we reached the mouth of the cave. To my surprise, the ‘huge’ cave they were referring to is the cave I’ve been wanting to visit – the Callao Cave.

Upon entering the cave’s huge opening, I instantly felt that the temperature inside is rather lower compared to outside. Upon walking just a few steps from the entrance I have seen a tarpaulin providing information about the archeology of the cave. Since it has been developed, exploring it is fairly easy as its pathway is of least resistance upon not having so much steep ascent and loose rocks. Moreover, it does not have slippery surfaces since we visited it in the summer.

Another reason for the easement in exploring this cave is due to the light that comes naturally through its chambers. When its limestones are illuminated by sunlight, it naturally shines which results in a natural sparkle aesthetic. The best time to see the dark chambers being lit by the sunlight is when the sun is high which is between 10 am to 1pm.

Going further inside, I have reached the main attraction which they call the Divine Room. Instantly I remembered the image of a chapel inside a cave I drooled over before. However, they don’t refer to it as a chapel but consider it as a cathedral since the locals have purposefully converted it to look like a cathedral by putting pews and an altar. In addition, since the structure has a large cavern with a high ceiling it somehow resembles a natural cathedral. Meanwhile, the large opening on the cave’s ceiling allows the sunlight to enter the cavern hence illuminating and making the place look stunning.

Expect that capturing the spotlight effect on the cave’s atrium can be elusive since you have to consider timing and finding the right angle. To have that perfect photo like the ones you may see on postcards and promotional ads, you might have to climb up on a stack of rocks to get that perfect angle. However, it would be safer for you to just find the most comfortable way to position yourself in capturing the best shot that you can have. Though this could look slightly different in advertisement photos since the cave is normally dimly lit, this will give you a more realistic image taken from a different angle.

The cave has seven chambers called Column, Chapel, Skeleton, Elephant’s Head, Praying Angel, Rocket, Lion’s Head, and Dog’s Head, and has irregular texture of massive rock formations and limestones which when accented by the skylight glow in hues of yellow, brown and greens.

I have decided not to explore all of the chambers though I have tried to go to some and try to identify the image that was named after each one. However, I can not visualize the rock formation’s images since I’m just trying to figure it out on my own. Therefore getting a guide would help you identify the images. Moreover, they can assist you to know more about the cave’s history and the mineral formations in each chamber.

Being a popular destination comes with a price. On my visit to this cave, I spotted some vandals on the wall, benches, and rock formations. Though visitors like us would want to leave a mark on the places we have visited, I believe that it would be better if we just take pictures only and let the beauty of the place just leave a mark on our memory. I hope that both the locals and tourists will cooperate in preserving this cave to keep its natural beauty.

Meanwhile, to ensure that you can bring home souvenirs other than the photos you took, you can proceed to its souvenir shop to buy refrigerator magnets, t-shirts, and other accessories. This would certainly remind you of your visit to Callao Cave and a good souvenir gift to your family and friends back home.

Before we headed home, I stayed for a while at the Callao Cave’s viewing deck to enjoy the scenic view of the Pinacanuanan River. I was also hoping to see a Kalaw bird since it was once abundant here hence the cave’s name. But since it is already rare in this place I haven’t seen one, but still, I was happy to finally have seen the natural cathedral of Callao Cave.

Pop Up Book Stop Project in Intramuros

Bibliotherapy, that’s what individuals might be thinking of pursuing to make themselves feel calmer. Bibliotherapy is about having and reading books that can help in improving the mental condition of a person. What do you think about having a book that can help you feel calm whenever you read it?

In the middle of a footpath of Plaza Roma in the heritage district of Intramuros is a mobile pop-up library. The structure is robustly made of steel and has an odd fixture of a slanted roof with shelves that houses a collection of pre-loved books with wooden benches inside where readers can freely seat.

The idea behind this Book Stop Project is to ignite the public’s interest in books, promoting a passion for reading for the next generations while encouraging others to share by enabling anybody to borrow books as well as donate old ones already gathering dust at home.

This pop-up library has a leap of faith in Honesty System with not one attendant or registration counter around. Anyone can just walk up to it, pick up a book, and sit on a bench to read without having to register for anything. However, the possibility of losing books is expected, and to increase and maintain its collections, everyone is encouraged to donate books, although it is significantly being replenished when they hold events such as open mic poetry reading, heritage talks, and storytelling sessions. These occasional community events are being held to pull in more people to check out its shelves and to serve as an avenue where people will be able to show their love for books and reading while making acquaintances in the process and donate should they want to.

The Book Stop Project attracts bookworms, plain curious ones, or even those who want to read but have no means of purchasing a book. Hence, while browsing the bookshelves you may encounter a regular crowd of bibliophiles, passersby, curious tourists, or even little children who still have to learn to read but love print materials. An ordinary sight here is a few street toddlers who are sharing and browsing a few collections of hardbound picture books left on the lower shelf. Good thing that the library has a lot of collections of children’s books for these kids who are deprived of books. Discipline has been instilled in them as they return and even arrange the books on the shelves after looking at them. To ensure that they will always have something to read and a book to look forward to browsing, anybody who has few items from their book collections that are no longer being used and may just be consuming space may leave them on the shelves of The Book Project as it may spark joy to another eager hungry reader.

More than a thousand conical and dome-shaped mounds that spread over and rise from the surface of the plains of Bohol is this globally known natural attraction. Chocolate Hills continues to draw attention for its scenic and unique characteristics.

Its name has been derived from its natural color during the dry season when the vegetation dries off and the hills turn chocolatey brown and resemble a field of giant Hershey kisses.

Two Viewing Sites

Of the thousand hills, two have been developed into resorts for tourism, the Sagbayan Peak and the viewing deck on Chocolate Hills Complex. The latter is the original resort located in Barangay Buenos Aires in Carmen which is a government-owned and operated resort.

Climbing the Hill

To reach the viewing deck you would have to literally climb the hill by stepping on cemented stairs. This makes climbing easy that you wouldn’t even notice that you are indeed ascending a hill. There are gazebos alongside the stairs, where you could rest should you get tired climbing. This is also a good spot for you to sit and look around the town of Carmen.

Upon reaching the top of the mound you’ll walk on its viewing deck. This spot will give you a 360° view of the hills that appears to be endless. Looking at the hills from afar, make it seem like they are similar in size and almost symmetrical in shape but they do actually vary in size. Since I went here during the rainy season, the hills are in verdant color due to the grass that covers it.

The hills have a beautiful green backdrop as the flatland is used for rice and corn farming. Also, trees grow on the base of the hills making the surroundings look greener. Though the landscape looks like a planned man-made creation, it is actually a natural monument that exudes organic beauty.

Influx of Tourist

Rest assured that climbing up, staying on the viewing deck, and descending on the mound will not be lonely since many tourists both local and foreign go here. This natural monument has become a famed tourist attraction as it makes every onlooker be awed with its majestic panoramas.

As soon as you enter the cafe, you will be welcomed by a woody cafe counter where baked goodies like muffins and fruits that are in season are displayed. Meanwhile, you would also notice the wide selection of delectable delicacies and drinks that they offer on their posted menu.

By trying these artisan-made ice creams you get to enjoy local flavors with world-class taste. Expect that any variant you will choose will give you a burst of its flavor and leave a nice aftertaste. As for my avocado ice cream, it tastes like the real fruit and it is milky, creamy, and amply sweetened.

Depending on where you are most comfortable to sit to dine, you can choose among the different areas it has. On one side it has a woody vibe which is furnished with shabby chic chairs, two-seater stripes upholstered chairs, and tables, meanwhile, on the other section, it has floral upholstered sofas and woven mats. Interestingly, its walls are tastefully designed with herbs and spices artworks and some coffee-related quotes. While the white curtains and draping on the glass wall give the place a homey and softer look.

The aroma inside will make you want to try their organic dishes, however, for tourists like me who only have a few minutes to stay before catching the ferry, trying their ice cream and bringing some of their baked goodies is all that I could do at that moment. Hence, visiting this cafe even for a few minutes has allowed me to find a sweet way to cap off my Bohol tour.

Since this is near the port, it is a good spot to drop by to have some sweet treats and delectable pastries. Also, this can be a good infill to your tour in Bohol as the healthy dishes being served here are worth trying.

On a personal note

Since I’ve been wanting to go to Bohol Bee farm but only has a limited time to stay on the island, the tour driver dropped me at this restaurant to get a taste of their ice cream before catching my ferry back to Cebu.

It may be zhort but will definitely allow you to appreciate nature, breathe in the river’s fresh air, feast on local food, witness the local culture, and encounter multicultural tourists. Authentic experience and personal tip

It is better to ztart eating before the trip commences. As for me, I arrived ten minutes before the cruise began. By the time I ztart eating, the trip had already launched and the vessel had been gliding on the water. I’d like to focus on eating and enjoying my food but zince I’m distracted by the marvelous views, I kept on looking at it. I ate less and would rather look at the fantastic views than grab a bite. With zo many things to appreciate during the one-hour cruise, you wouldn’t want to take your eyes off the exquisite views.
